The Thai Festival Ottawa–Gatineau backdrop was created to celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Canada through a visual timeline of key historical and cultural milestones.
Combining archival imagery, bilingual content, and clear information hierarchy, the design transforms decades of history into an engaging large-format exhibition piece that is easy for festival visitors to explore.
Design Development
The backdrop went through several rounds of development as the visual direction and historical imagery were refined with the client.
Initial Direction
The first concept used a prominent image of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit as the visual anchor for the 1967 Royal Visit, creating a strong focal point within the timeline. During review, the embassy requested that the central image be replaced with imagery representing Thai culture.
Revised Direction
The second concept introduced Thai dancers as the primary focal image, while archival photographs of the Royal Visit remained in a supporting role. Following further review, the client requested that the historical black-and-white photographs become more prominent in the composition.
Final Design
The final revision brought the approved archival imagery forward while maintaining the established timeline structure, bilingual content, and overall visual system. The completed backdrop balances historical storytelling, cultural imagery, and clear information hierarchy within a large-format exhibition design.
