Moon of the Turning Leaves is a dystopian novel by Waubgeshig Rice that explores Anishinaabe survival, resilience, tradition, and community after the collapse of modern civilization. Created for the Penguin Cover Design Award, the cover was designed to capture the story’s sense of quiet unease while remaining bold and legible.
Inspired by the recurring image of the Waawaaskone flower, the design combines symbolic imagery, distressed texture, and oversized typography. A limited red, black, and cream palette creates tension and contrast, while the torn-paper detail reinforces the sense of a world changed by time and collapse.
